On Thursday, October 17, from 9:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., GAMeC will exceptionally open its doors to show for the first time Andrea Mastrovito’s installation Tristes presentimientos de lo que ha de acontecer, which will be exhibited within the show Una Galleria, Tante Collezioni, becoming part of the artistic heritage of the City of Bergamo.
The work was created in 2022 on the occasion of YO LO VI, the artist’s first public solo exhibition in South America staged at the PROA21 exhibition space, and produced as part of the ON AIR – Argentina-Italy Art Residency program, born from a collaboration between GAMeC and Fundación PROA in Buenos Aires.
Tristes presentimientos de lo que ha de acontecer is one of the most recent examples of the technique and themes that distinguish Mastrovito’s research. Inspired by the title of the first panel from Francisco Goya’s The Disasters of War, the artist used drawing as the glue for a large assemblage made from furniture found on the streets of Buenos Aires during his Argentine residency. This first act developed for more than fifteen meters along the walls of PROA21 until it resulted in the second part, composed of thousands of frottages of everyday objects: here the drawing, which the artist has always used as a tool for understanding the world and reality, takes shape and, pushing into the third dimension, translates into sculpture.
The installation joins the GAMeC Collections ten years after the solo exhibition At the End of the Line, in which Andrea Mastrovito used drawing and frottage extensively for the first time.
GAMeC Director Lorenzo Giusti and Andrea Mastrovito, in the presence of Gian Piero Gasperini, coach of Atalanta Bergamasca Calcio, will present the work at the end of a charity auction—with participation by invitation—during which three bottles of wine from Cascina Gilli, the vineyard in Monferrato with which Gian Piero Gasperini and his son Davide collaborate, will be auctioned off. Each bottle, conceived as a unique work, will feature a label designed by Andrea Mastrovito.
Proceeds from the auction will be donated to support GAMeC’s Solleva-menti project, dedicated to people with mental distress with the aim of improving their well-being through art and culture. The project stems from the experience gained by GAMeC’s Education Department in its decades-long relationship with local organizations working in the field of mental health prevention and treatment. Solleva-menti aims to offer people with mental difficulties the opportunity to participate in workshops, guided tours and creative activities designed to meet their specific needs, making the museum an accessible and stimulating place where they can experience art in a participatory and inclusive way.
